Is Gratitude a Fad?

January 12, 2016 Anders Peterson

Someone from within the Middle Circle network recently told me about a New York Times article that is helping to generate a lively conversation around the topic of gratitude. Since many of us have interest in practicing gratitude, I wanted to invite you to read the article as well as the reader responses and explore where you sit on the spectrum of opinions. Are people actually becoming more grateful these days, or are they just popularizing a new hashtag (#gratitude #grateful, etc.)? Is practicing gratitude somewhat of a selfish act? Is there a right or wrong way to be grateful?

  • Original New York Times Article, "The Selfish Side of Gratitude," by Barbara Ehrenreich (Dec. 31 2015)

  • New York Times reader responses in "Two Sides of Gratitude" (Jan. 9 2016)

  • Original Susan Sarandon "Science of Gratitude" NPR radio program mentioned in Ehrenreich's article (Nov. 21 2015)
